MDR Cyber comments on the large scale cyber-attack in Georgia

On Monday 28 October, it was reported that Georgia had been hit by a large scale cyber-attack.

Commenting on this, MDR Cyber’s Cyber Intelligence Director Mark Tibbs said:

“This is not the first time Georgia has experienced a country-wide cyber-attack. In 2008, weeks before invasion by Russian troops, the country’s internet infrastructure experienced something similar. These more recent attacks have reportedly targeted over 2000 sites, including government entities and the state broadcaster.

“Many of the victims of these most recent attacks were also private companies caught in the crossfire of this activity. Good basic cybersecurity measures and crisis management planning can greatly reduce the impact for businesses inadvertently caught up in large-scale attacks like this.

“Who is behind these more recent attacks is not yet known, although given the precise coordination, scale and targeting, some have suggested it could be politically-motivated action from a rival state.”

Mark featured on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Up All Night programme on 31 October discussing the attack. Listen to the five minute segment here (from 3:19:30 in).
